Me & My Shadow

Maisie has named her shadow Owl

My shadow's name is Maisie

Everything I do, she does

I brush my teeth, she wants to brush her teeth

Every day I love her more and more

And my shadow needs me less and less

I take a sip of water

She spills it all over her face

I love her more and more

She needs me less and less

I walk a few feet

She breaks out into a run -- and then a stumble

I love her more and more

She needs me less and less

I ask her a question

She eagerly screams a response

I love her more and more

She needs me less and less

I take a spoonful of yogurt

She paints her face

I love her more and more

She needs me less and less

I color a few inches

She scribbles the entire page -- and floor

I love her more and more

She needs me less and less

She makes it look so easy, a shadow confidently but clumsily breaking off onto its own

I hope like real shadows, mine gets taller than me, more graceful and patient

Unlike a real shadow, I hope she'll make her own movements, chart her own path

She'll need me less and less

I'll still love her more and more
